Director, Packaging Engineering

Job Summary:

The Director, CAD Engineering has the primary responsibility for the development of technical, cosmetic packaging conceptions for the Shiseido Americas group. This person will lead product design activities, utilizing knowledge of engineering principles and anticipated manufacturing processes. Products such as caps / closures, containers (e.g. jars and bottles), compacts, mascaras, eye, and lip products, etc. will be the focus. New and innovative designs, considering the manufacturability, cost and marketing brief requirements are the basis for design creation.

Additional responsibilities will include managing the procurement of rapid prototypes / 3D models, primarily through internal model making capabilities (using Stratasys equipment) and the associated budget for this activity. Providing basic training for internal team members in component design and other technical topics is also required.

Secondary responsibilities include providing design and 3D model support for the internal production team (e.g. pucks and other consumable tooling) and associated project support as required.

These activities will play a key role in the support of new product launches for all Shiseido brands, from design brief to production execution. The ability to work in cross-functional teams and understand each of Shiseido’s brand’s needs will be critical for this role.

The individual will be expected to drive his/her own projects and to support other team members, to ensure the required project tasks are performed in a timely manner, with excellent quality and attention to detail.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Concept and Design Support
    • Provide product design support to all teams for product conception, design guidance and ultimately, drawing and 3D model creation (e.g. Package Engineers, Creative, PD, etc.)
    • Experience with programming and running 3D model making machinery is a plus (Stratasys preferred)
    • Assist in identifying technical solutions to satisfy Marketing briefs
    • Provide guidance for internally developed technical designs and manage the production or procurement of models for preliminary validation purposes
  • Technical Assistance and Training
    • Assist in the training of new and current employees in product design, component, and assembly dimensioning, as well as tolerance stack-up techniques for various commodity types
    • Travel to other Shiseido locations (e.g. NYC), suppliers and project related meetings as required
    • Provide support for fixture and equipment design needs for the Packaging Lab (e.g. design of test fixtures, etc.)
  • Project Management
    • Ability to handle multi-task launch projects with limited supervision and support
    • Meet timeline due dates for all required Packaging actions
  • Engineering & Testing
    • Review and approve technical engineering drawings for components/assemblies
    • Assist internal team members in performing complex dimensional and tolerance stack-up analysis
    • Perform statistical analysis on test data to assess and determine specification values
    • Assist in creating new package development protocols for the furthering of innovative designs
  • People Management (if required)
    • Responsibilities include recruitment, training, retention, support and employee performance appraisal
    • Ability to supervise a small team of engineers and/or temp employees
    • Define, coach and support the individual development plan for each direct report
    • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

Financial Accountability

  • Manage department annual budgets for various software licenses, 3D model equipment (includes maintenance, material supply, improvements, etc.) and other items as needed
  • Manage personal travel and department expense budget monthly

Qualifications & Competencies: 

  • 10-15 years of related experience in Mechanical or Package Engineering design, with 5+ years of primary packaging design for the cosmetics and / or personal care industries
  • Excellent knowledge of various manufacturing processes, injection molded component design, basic injection mold design, plastic resin knowledge, decoration techniques and general assembly methodology
  • Ability to challenge Packaging definitions and provide recommendations to mitigate any technical risks, while achieving Marketing’s concept vision
  • Investigate alternative package designs to reduce costs and increase production line efficiency
  • Manage projects with autonomy, but be able to escalate issues when needed and make critical decisions when appropriate
  • Analytical, financial and organization skills required
  • Responsible for initiating and resolving queries from other functions in a timely manner
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills (verbal, written, good listening skills, providing support with trust, respect, and transparency)
  • Ability to present to Sr. Management concisely and provide thorough summaries of critical issues with recommendations
  • Has a sense of humility and respect when communicating to team members of the Japanese culture
  • Drive projects with 100% responsibility and active engagement
  • Problem Solving: ability to initiate risk assessments, predict, recognize, and execute corrective actions as needed
