Chemist, Raw Material Development

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated raw material chemist or senior chemist to join our team. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in developing, formulating, and executing our clean beauty and sustainability strategy and program. This individual should possess a strong background in chemistry and material science and a passion for clean beauty and sustainability. This role will be an integral part of our R&D team, responsible for ensuring that our products are efficacious, eco-conscious and environmentally friendly.

The overall function of this position is to explore and evaluate novel cosmetic materials and technologies which are suitable for Shiseido next-gen clean skincare and color cosmetic products. The person is able to work independently in a team environment, handle multiple tasks and interact with cross-functional teams such as formulation, process development, claim, manufacturing and marketing. The Sr. Chemist will also be responsible for preparing presentations to internal groups and train the junior team members.

Besides, this role will also help leader team to build the clean beauty library and support product launch of NARS, Drunk Elephant, and other Shiseido brands.

Self-driven with communication skill is required for this role. A formulation experience is a plus.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Explore, evaluate, and identify the novel cosmetic raw materials and technologies suitable for the development of clean beauty base technology in skincare and color cosmetics, support the RM coding process
  • Formulate and develop new products that are efficacious, compliant and meet retailor clean guidance
  • Collaborate/communicate with external raw material suppliers
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest developments of clean beauty and sustainability, bring innovative ideas to the team
  • Conduct stability testing, tracking prototype stability (texture, odor, pH, viscosity, appearance), update result charts, summarize data for review at each time point
  • Collaborate and support the formulation team to deliver new formula (prototype) to product development phase
  • Follow the mega trend of beauty industry to develop new formulas and innovate existing formulas under management direction. Responsible for the maintenance of accuracy of information in database (Coptis)
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to internal groups and marketing teams
  • Responsible for compliance of assigned work areas with company set standards for laboratory safety and general maintenance
  • Any additional tasks assigned by manager

Qualifications & Competencies:

  • Bachelor or master’s degree in material science, chemistry, chemical engineering or similar science majors
  • 3-5 years in raw material, consumer goods, cosmetics or food industry with emphasis on materials
  • Knowledge of raw material characterization and instrumental measurement
  • Motivated and works well in teams and independently
  • Strong organization, communication and writing skills   
  • Be able to collaborate with groups outside R&D to help address product/formula issues  
  • Able to work on project independently
  • Able to handle any type of formulation
